London (Agenzia Fides) - To adopt concrete commitments for a reform of the economic and financial system, an essential condition to eradicate poverty and hunger, modifying models of production and unsustainable consumption: is the appeal CIDSE, a network of 17 Catholic NGOs involved at an international level with projects and specific working groups in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, launched to world leaders.
The appeal, says a statement sent to Fides, was shared by more than 50 leaders of international organizations of civil society and intellectuals, calling for "a real transformation". 70 days after the crucial Conference in Paris, as part of the UN Convention on Climate Change, the text hopes that "one can keep the increase of the global temperature below 1.5° C". It is urgent to fill the apparent gap between the few who own half of global wealth and the rest of the world", it reads, ensuring "a complete equality between men and women" and preserving "the right to food for billions of people, especially small producers that provide most of the food in the world". The aim is "to ensure protection and support for the poorest and most vulnerable in the struggle for adaptation to climate change and build a more just world", transforming "the culture of domination and consumerism in a culture of self-sufficiency, care and solidarity".
The document cites the religious leaders involved in this field and Pope Francis' encyclical "Laudato Si’, sharing an invitation to an "ecological conversion". The encyclical "provides a broad and deep reflection of our relationship with the environment and the way in which we establish our social, economic and political life", reiterating that in the world "many people are showing their enthusiasm before this challenge".
