Dhaka (Agenzia Fides) - "We have learned of the news of the murder of an Italian aid worker. We are shocked and saddened. As Catholic Church we express condemnation for the execrable gesture and solidarity to the family and to the Italian nation. Even government officials and many society leaders have condemned the murder": says to Agenzia Fides His Exc. Mgr. Theotonius Gomes, Auxiliary Bishop of Dhaka, after the murder of the Italian Cesare Tavella, who was working in Bangladesh for a Dutch NGO, gunned down by militants of the Islamic State (IS).
"There is general apprehension with regards to the presence of the IS in Bangladesh. We know it is a global phenomenon and that local militant groups may be influenced by IS. We hope the government takes measures to guarantee security to all citizens", says the Bishop.
"As we are all concerned about the growth of militant violence and fundamentalism in the country, we appeal to the government so that the situation does not get out of control. But we are aware that recently also lay bloggers have been affected, therefore all people with an open mind in civil society are potential victims of extrajudicial killings", he notes.
Catholics, the Bishop concluded, "continue to live a peaceful life with faith. Our life is in God's hands". (PA) (Agenzia Fides 29/09/2015)
