Coquimbo (Agenzia Fides) - "All the parishes in the country, Catholic schools, apostolic movements of all the dioceses are praying for those who are suffering today in the Archdiocese of La Serena. This Campaign aims to express the most beautiful thing, that is to say, the soul of Chile, which is the solidarity and faith in Jesus Christ, who calls us to be disciples in solidarity": says His Exc. Mgr. Pedro Ossandón, Auxiliary Bishop of Santiago, President of the Social Pastoral - Caritas Chile, who visited the most affected areas hit by the earthquake and tsunami on 16 September (see Fides 19/09/2015) in the Archdiocese of La Serena, encouraging the Campaign "For a united nation". His Exc. Mgr. Luis Fernando Ramos Pérez, also auxiliary of Santiago, other Caritas workers and representatives of relief organizations were with him.
According to information sent to Fides, after visiting the affected areas of the Prelature of Illapel, in particular the Province of Choapa, representatives of Caritas Chile went to Baquedano, in the port of Coquimbo and Tongoy, the areas most affected by the tsunami, to identify the main needs, define the collection centers and coordinate other services.
After nearly 10 days since the disaster, rescue teams continue to search for missing persons after the tsunami. So far 15 have died, 13 thousand are homeless, some 400 boats damaged by the tsunami.
"To all the families affected - said the Bishop - we would like to say that, as Church, with faith in Jesus, we bring solidarity, both with prayer and with constant unconditional material support. During a visit to the town of Salamanca we saw people whose homes were damaged by the earthquake and are collecting food to be sent to their brothers: victims who help victims. Thank you for your testimony, effort and sacrifice. We know that people who suffer are workers and people who work hard, that means setting an example to the whole country".
