Yangon (Agenzia Fides) - A free and transparent vote, a harbinger of genuine democracy; aimed at candidates who are building peace, reconciliation, the common good: is what Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, Archbishop of Yangon hopes for, in a message released ahead of the elections on 8 November. It is the first free elections since the military junta left power, ushering in a new political era.
"Five years ago, the dawn of hope broke forth in the parched lands of despair. After decades of sacrifice of blood and tears, my Myanmar Brothers and Sisters tasted democracy", notes the Cardinal in the text sent to Agenzia Fides. Termed "controlled democracy" by our rulers, that dawn brought "encouraging changes", he says.
The message continues: "Through this appeal I call upon the rulers and the people to make the forthcoming election a true exercise in democracy. But democracy is a long and arduous journey. The rulers and the ruled need mutual accompaniment in this journey ".
"Voting is a fundamental right in a democracy", said the Archbishop. The primary duty bearer of this responsibility is the Election Commission. Then he focuses on the candidates, inviting them to prepare themselves to "serve the nation" that is a "rainbow nation of colorful tribes and great religions" and not to look at special interests.
The Cardinal identifies specific features regarding the candidates, as guidelines for voters: those who vote "pave the way for national reconciliation and peace", have "the ability to safeguard the country’s nature and natural resources", "promote the comprehensive development of our children and youth, creating employment opportunities". Emphasis is put on those who "ensure an inclusive economic system that is beneficial especially to the vulnerable", and education to benefit of all especially ethnic groups.
Finally, it demands attention to "promote a culture of democracy that proactively promotes human rights, media freedom".
"The election - he concludes - is a great window of opportunity to this nation. Let peace and justice flow like a river, bringing joy and happiness to all the people of this great nation". (PA) (Agenzia Fides 25/09/2015)
