Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - In Mexico, over 20 million children live totally deprived of any rights. Many of these children sleep in the streets, suffer hunger and are exposed to multiple risk situations. To curb the spread of this phenomenon, a proposal to reform the General Law of Social Development, with the aim to establish children's rights as a priority has been launched. Mexico is a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and has the highest poverty rate, after Israel. According to a note sent to Fides, it is urgent to make the legislative changes, necessary to build a new model for protecting the rights of children. This reform proposal aims at guaranteeing the human rights of the Child, in accordance with the provisions provided for in the Constitution and in international treaties to which Mexico adheres.
