AFRICA/KENYA - The protest of teachers takes to the street, the Church calls for dialogue

Tuesday, 8 September 2015

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - Kenyan teachers took to the streets on September 7 to demand a wage increase, as determined by a court order which provided for an increase from 50 to 60%. The government, however, has said it cannot afford this increase.
Schools across the Country are paralyzed by union protests launched by two unions, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet).
Faced with growing protests by teachers, in recent days, His Exc. Mgr. Maurice Muhatia Makumba, Bishop of Nakaru and President of the Education Commission and the religious education of the Episcopal Conference of Kenya, had asked all the parties the path of dialogue to end the strike. Mgr. Makumba said he was concerned because the constant strikes by teachers are ruining the quality of education, threatening the economic and social development of the Country. (L.M.)
