Melo (Agenzia Fides) - A small chapel in Uruguay is named after Blessed Oscar Romero, in recognition of the "martyred Bishop" of El Salvador, recently beatified. Mgr. Romero (1917-1980), known for his preaching in defense of human rights, was the Archbishop of San Salvador until his violent death 35 years ago.
According to the magazine "Communion", of the diocese of Melo (387 km northeast of Montevideo), the humble temple was named "Chapel of the Blessed Romero and Latin American Martyrs". On the right of the altar there is an image of Blessed Romero who gives his blessing.
The construction of the chapel was an initiative by Fr. Miguel Garcia Cava, a Spanish priest who worked in the missions in Chile and Argentina and later in Uruguay until his death in 2004.
According to the publication, sent to Fides, the chapel was inaugurated in 1993 and dedicated to the martyrs of Latin America, starting from Alonso Rodriguez, Juan del Castillo and Roque Gonzalez (martyrs in Paraguay), among others. Father Miguel wanted to initially give the name of Romero to the chapel, but the rules of the Church would not allow it.
Last Sunday, after seeing the documentary "Oscar Romero: a missionary of God" with the community, the bishop of the diocese of Melo, His Exc. Mgr. Heriberto Andrés Bodeant Fernández, who celebrated the Mass, highlighted the work of Fr. Miguel and announced the new name of the chapel. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 30/05/2015)
