AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Elections: the Archbishop of Medellin urges the socio-political formation of the community

Wednesday, 18 March 2015

Medellin (Agenzia Fides) - On 25 October the regional elections will be held in Colombia to choose mayors, councilors, governors and deputies. "For a successful outcome of such an important civil event in the life of society - writes His Exc. Mgr. Ricardo Tobón Restrepo, Archbishop of Medellín - we have to reach this moment in a calm and peaceful manner, with a socio-political formation, in order to act responsibly".
Due to the lack of respect for the common good, political activity has failed in Colombia, continues the Archbishop. "The basic requirement of the common good is the respect of the person, of his dignity, his conscience and his rights", he insists.
Mgr. Tobón Restrepo’s message, sent to Fides, was published with the imminent opening of the election campaigns. The Church therefore feels the need to prepare the community to this event and at the same time to avoid the clashes that occurred in the last elections. The Archbishop of Medellin concludes with an invitation to all: "We must seriously consider our participation in social life, informing ourselves about the reality we live in, the candidates to choose and make a choice with freedom and responsibility".
