AMERICA/MEXICO - Bishop of Torreón calls for “more proposals and less protests to achieve peace”

Saturday, 6 December 2014

Torreón (Agenzia Fides) – “More proposals and less protests, to restore peace” Bishop José Guadalupe Galván Galindo of the diocese of Torreón, Coahuila (Mexico), urged the diocese community, preparing to celebrate on 12 December the important feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, national and continental patron saint.
“It is true protests are useful – said Bishop Galván Galindo, according to a report sent to Fides - but we too must make proposals. Certainly the problems are many, but besides protests we need proposals. I call on our young people, always full of initiative, to convince the rest of society to unite and work together to restore peace at last … It is not right to leave everything to the authorities, every sector must make its contribution according to its possibilities, only in this way will peace return”.
In Mexico tension is still high following the disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa (see Fides 10/10/2014) and the Bishops’ Conference has asked people to pray for peace during the novena in preparation for the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe (see Fides 28/11/2014). Unfortunately some demonstrations turned into violent with clashes, despite a call from the local Church to ignore anyone trying to break into a peaceful protest to start trouble.
