ASIA/PAKISTAN - The Taliban stop the vaccination campaign for children against polio

Saturday, 28 July 2012

Karachi (Agenzia Fides) - The Taliban offensive has forced Pakistan to suspend, in different tribal areas, the country's vaccination campaign against polio for thousands of children.
According to local sources, a Ghanaian doctor, working with the United Nations in this campaign, was wounded together with his driver after a shoot-out against them occurred in the village of Gadap, north of the city. Already last month the Taliban had announced their opposition to the anti-polio vaccination campaign in some tribal areas of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan, putting at risk nearly 250 thousand children.
