ASIA/INDIA - In 10 years 7,563 rapes in the state of Jharkhand, the tribal population is also severely affected

Ranchi (Agenzia Fides) - Since the establishment of the new state of Jharkhand, on November 15, 2000, 7,563 rapes have been recorded, 3,398 acts of violence, 576 assisted deaths and over 100 deaths caused by starvation. According to the recent report "Jharkhand Human Rights Report 2001-2010", released by the Jharkhand Human Rights Movement, in the state of Jharkhand 174 women were raped and 194 cases of violence against people belonging to the tribal population also took place. The violation of human rights is rampant and, according to rights activists, among the 100 deaths caused by hunger, about 40 members of belong to primitive tribal groups. Most of the deaths were recorded in Palamau, Chatra, Ranchi, Koderma, Hazaribagh, Godda, Dumka and Giridih. The report also highlighted the plight of "dalits": 60 people were killed and 106 acts of violence and 1,437 cases of brutality against them.
