AFRICA/SUDAN - Nuba Mountains: too many victims of war put a strain on the staff of the only hospital in the area

Friday, 16 March 2012

Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - The war that has been disrupting the Nuba Mountains since June 2011 is putting in serious crisis the ability of the local hospital to take care of the victims, hit by bullets and bomb shrapnel. Among these there are several children who have lost limbs. This is confirmed by the Sudan Catholic Radio Network site. A nurse said that only last week, 220 people were assisted in the health structure injured by shots of firearms and bombs dropped from Sudanese planes. A doctor says that the war has entailed a heavy workload for the hospital. The practitioner reveals that only last month he carried out 70 surgical operations. The Nuba Mountains are located in South Kordofan, State of Sudan, on the border with southern Sudan, where rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) are fighting against the army of Khartoum.
