Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - In the Nuba Mountains the same kind of crimes against humanity are being committing as in Darfur. This was stated in Juba, capital of South Sudan, by Makesh Kapila, former head of the UNDP (UN Development Programme) in Sudan, who led a delegation of Aegis (a British NGO which deals in preventing crimes against humanity ) who visited the refugee camp of Yida, in the State of Units (South Sudan) and some areas of the Nuba Mountains. The camp hosts refugees from the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan, State of Sudan, where heavy fighting oppose the troops of Khartoum and those of the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N).
According to Kapila, Sudanese troops in the Nuba Mountains are committing the same kind of crimes committed against civilians in Darfur (West Sudan), but on a larger scale.
According to the NGO responsible the war in the region has hit 1.2 million civilians. Of these 300,000 have been forced to flee, while the local agricultural production has collapsed and is able to supply only 25% of the population needs.
Kapila has appealed to the international community to intervene to stop the conflict by imposing a no-fly zone for military aircraft, and urged countries that supply weapons to Sudan to block new war supplies to the army of Khartoum. According to Kapila, Sudanese forces use weapons and equipment from Iran, China, Ukraine, Russia and the United States. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 07/03/2012)
