AMERICA/PERU - Mgr. Salvador Piñeiro García-Calderón elected President of the Episcopal Conference

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - The 99th Ordinary Assembly of the Bishops of Peru, elected the Archbishop of Ayacucho and castrensian Bishop of Peru, His Exc. Mgr. Salvador Pineiro Garcia-Calderon, as the new President of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, for the period from 2012 to 2015. He succeeds Mgr. Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte, OFM. Mgr. Salvador Piñeiro was born in Lima on January 27, 1949. He attended the College "La Salle", then studied philosophy and Theology at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology and Civil of Lima. He obtained a degree in Education and a Licentiate in Theology. From 1965 he studied at the Seminary of Santo Toribio. He was ordained a priest on May 6, 1973. In his pastoral ministry he has held positions as Parochial Vicar, Pastor, Professor, Rector of the Major Seminary of Santo Toribio, Vicar for the Pastoral Care, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Lima, the Regional Episcopal Vicar. He was elected Bishop by Pope John Paul II on July 21, 2001, appointed Castrensian Bishop of Peru, he was consecrated on September 2, 2001. On July 8, 2003 he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Lurin. On August 8, 2011 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Ayacucho.
The Peruvian Bishops also elected, in addition to the President of the Episcopal Conference, also His Exc. Mgr. Pedro Barreto Jimeno, SJ., Archbishop of Huancayo, as First Vice President, and His Exc. Mgr.Javier Del Rio, Archbishop of Arequipa, Second Vice-President. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 26/01/2012)
