AMERICA/MEXICO - "The baptized should have greater participation in the social context": Cardinal Rivera during the XVI pilgrimage of the Archdiocese of Mexico

Tuesday, 17 January 2012

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, Archbishop of Mexico, encouraged all the baptized, especially the laity to participate in the elections to be held July and to take a leading role because beyond the vote, human rights become a reality, and therefore democracy grows. Cardinal Rivera expressed the need for this participation in civic life in the closing Mass of the XVI pilgrimage of the Archdiocese of Mexico, celebrated in the Basilica of Guadalupe.
On the same occasion, the Cardinal also illustrated the pastoral guidelines for 2012. After referring to providential events that will illuminate this period, such as Pope Benedict XVI's visit, he called us to live intensely this ecclesial renewal which should encourage all the baptized. The laity, in particular, are called to have a significant presence in the social context, to help develop human relationships with more respect for life and dignity of people. He then added that, beyond the mere exercise of the vote, the baptized must have greater involvement in the social context, to make human rights a reality, and so finally, democracy can grow.
In the note sent to Fides, it says that the pilgrimage, which was attended by about 30 000 faithful took place in the context of 480 years of the apparitions of the Virgin of Tepeyac. The Archdiocese of Mexico offered on this occasion the fruits of the pastoral activities of the year 2011 and the commitment to prepare the celebration for the 20 years of the Second Diocesan Synod.
