AMERICA/MEXICO - "Casa de la Cristiandad", a soup kitchen for the poor and most vulnerable people has just opened

Culiacan (Agenzia Fides) - "Casa de la Cristiandad", a soup kitchen for poor people, migrants, unemployed, drug addicts and alcoholics has opened recently, in Culiacan, the largest city in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. The project, aimed at the most vulnerable, was the wish expressed by a priest of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, and the Misión de Jesús of the Divine Mercy of the city. From Monday to Saturday, priests and lay people will offer breakfast and lunch to those in need. The initial aim will be to assist 50 people a day. The canteen has been called 'universal' because it helps people from different backgrounds, street children, drug addicts, the elderly, alcoholics, people who do not have the possibility of a meal. The Patronage of the Misión de Jesús of the Divine Mercy also runs two other canteens in the Civil hospital and one in the General, where the families of patients are assisted. The beneficiaries are from 200 to 350 per day, about 600 000 people a year. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 11/01/2012)
