AMERICA/VENEZUELA - Mgr. Padrón Sanchez new President of the episcopal Conference

Caracas (Agenzia Fides) – Mgr. Diego Rafael Padrón Sanchez, Archbishop of Cumaná, was elected new President of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (VEC) for the period 2012-2015. In the new group Mgr. José Luis Azuaje, Bishop of San Carlos del Zulia, first vice president, and Mgr. Mario del Valle Moronto, Bishop of San Cristobal, the second Vice-President will also be part of the new responsibles of the VEC. Mgr.Jesus Gonzalez de Zarate, Auxiliary Bishop of Caracas, was elected Secretary General. The new authorities of the VEC take office immediately to follow the course of the XCVII Ordinary Plenary Assembly, which ends on January 12. Among the first tasks of this new direction there is the approval of a three-year plan for the period 2012-2015. The Assembly began on Saturday, January 7 with the Eucharistic celebration presided by Mgr.Ubaldo Santana Sequera, Archbishop of Maracaibo, outgoing President of VEC, concelebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio, Monsignor Pietro Parolin, and by all the Bishops attending the XCVII plenary Assembly. On Sunday afternoon, January 8, there was the meeting with Caritas Venezuela, the presentation of the report of the Venezuelan College in Rome and that of the General Secretariat.
