AMERICA/PERU - More than 492 000 families in extreme poverty sustained in 2011

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - In 2011, the social program Juntos supported a total of 492,871 families in Peru who live in extreme poverty in 702 districts of 116 provinces of 14 departments. This social initiative is active in the jurisdictions of Amazonas, Ancash, Apurimac, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Junín, La Libertad, Loreto, Pasco, Piura and Puno. With regard to health, from January to November last year, 971,506 children were registered at the Comprehensive Health Insurance Fund and may have access to services. The same free assistance is given to 482,164 mothers. In addition, 924,761 children received their national identity card, which is essential to make sure that children and mothers have access to health services, education and food provided by the State.
