AMERICA/ECUADOR - The Diocese of Ibarra celebrates 150 years of its foundation: Christmas opens the Jubilee Year

Ibarra (Agenzia Fides) - The Diocese of Ibarra, Ecuador, celebrates its 150 years. The Bishop of Ibarra, His Exc. Mgr. Valter Maggi has called for this reason a Jubilee Year, which will be opened with a Eucharistic celebration on December 25 at 11 am and will end December 29, 2012. The diocese of Ibarra is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Quito. In 2006 there were 324,700 baptized out of 340,000 inhabitants. It is currently governed by Bishop Mgr. Valter Dario Maggi (appointed on 25 March 2011). The diocese includes the northern province of Imbabura in north Ecuador, whose capital is the city of Ibarra. The inhabitants speak the Quechua language. In the area there is the Imbabura volcano, 4609 meters high. The territory is divided into 61 parishes.
For the celebration of this important jubilee event several initiatives are being prepared, relying on the cooperation of other institutions in the area, including the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, which has an office in Ibarra. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 22/12/2011)
