AMERICA/ARGENTINA - Necessary to deepen the dialogue between Church and government

Friday, 16 December 2011

Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - Members of the new Presidency of the Episcopal Conference of Argentina, led by the President, His Exc. Mgr.José María Arancedo, Archbishop of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz, visited the Secretary of the Cult of the Nation, Guillermo Oliveri, in order to deepen the dialogue between the Church in Argentina and the government of Cristina Kirchner. The meeting was described by official sources as an act of protocol, even though visits from members of the episcopal authority to members of the government had been interrupted for a long time.
Mgr. Arancedo arrived at the headquarters of the Secretariat of the Registry accompanied by the first Vice-President of the Episcopal Conference Argentina, Mgr. Virgilio Bressanelli, Bishop of Neuquen; by the second vice president, Mgr.Mario Cargnello, Archbishop of Salta and the Secretary General, Mgr. Enrique Eguia Segui, Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires. The Secretary of the Cult of the nation, Guillermo Oliveri, was with the Director General of the Catholic cult of the Chancery, Luis Saguier Fonrouge. During the meeting, the Bishops, who welcomed Oliveri’s invitation, were also satisfied with the meeting held by a group of representatives of the Argentine Episcopate a couple of weeks before with the newly-elected president Cristina Kirchner.
From the information Fides collected, we learn that in these days there will be a meeting on behalf of the President of the Episcopal Commission for Social Pastoral, Mgr. Jorge Lozano, with several leaders of the Rural Workers Union Argentina, while the government discusses the status of this sector of workers. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 16/12/2011)
