AMERICA/MEXICO - A truce to violence, at least for the Christmas season

Tuesday, 6 December 2011

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of Cuernavaca (Morelos) in Mexico, Archbishop Alfonso Cortés Contreras joined the request for a truce for Christmas proposed to the drug cartels by the poet and journalist Javier Sicilia, but also asked their repentance for the pain they have caused to society. Mgr. Cortés said: "I want to launch them a brotherly appeal and in the name of God: do you think this is not the right path, which is not the path of peace, which is not the way to live as brothers and sisters and as human beings". These days close to Christmas and the birth of Christ, said Bishop, the Catholics invite you to reflect on the Commandments and not go against God's laws, as establishes by the fifth commandment: Do not take the lives of others.
In the note sent to Fides, the Bishop stressed: "This situation causes a lot of pain, a lot of damage and discomfort in this life we live; we must be messengers of peace, that God our Lord blesses them and is able to touch their hearts". The Bishop also noted that many of the people involved in these criminal organizations act "more through ignorance than malice, even if evil exists and is found in the heart of man, and man chooses evil". Violence in Mexico has become a major problem in the country (see Fides 22/11/2011). (CE) (Agenzia Fides 06/12/2011)
