AMERICA/MEXICO - "We must discern the signs of the times and be witnesses of hope before violence", urges Cardinal Rivera

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - The Cardinal Archbishop of Mexico, Norberto Rivera Carrera, urged Mexicans not to think that they have already been defeated and not to give in to despair in the face of rising violence across the country. During the celebration of the first Sunday of Advent in the Cathedral of Mexico City, the Archbishop said that Christians should not indulge in pessimism before the situation that the country is experiencing.
"To those who for some reason have lost hope, especially in these times of violence, in these times of difficulty, in these times of confusion - the Cardinal said - as Christians we must not only show we are vigilant, active, but show that Christian hope can be lived forever". During his homily, Cardinal Rivera Carrera called on the Mexican society of believers to continue to work for a fair and peaceful country, and to witness the expectation of the return of the Messiah.
"We must be proactive, dynamic and discern the signs of the times, without being drawn by the attitudes or ideologies to fashion, without falling into drowsiness or indifference in the face of what is happening in our world and our society", the Cardinal stated. The Church in Mexico has long been denouncing situations of violence and corruption (see Fides 26/11/2011, 22/11/2011, 08/10/2011) and the same Cardinal Rivera has received threats.
