AMERICA/CHILE - The young and the "Youth Mission" at the center of the next Assembly of the Episcopate

Thursday, 10 November 2011

Santiago (Agenzia Fides) - The 102th Plenary Assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Chile will begin on Monday, November 14 till Friday 18 November in Punta de Tralca. 32 bishops currently in office will attend the Assembly. As usual the conference will be opened with a Mass presided by the Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr. Ivo Scapolo, who for the first time will speak at the Plenary. According to the note sent to Fides, the main theme of this assembly will be the young, even on the occasion of "Youth Mission" that the Chilean Church wants to start in 2012, in the context of the Continental Mission. For this reason, 15 young people were specially invited from various areas of service to society and from different regions, with which the Bishops will discuss the reality that young people live, their faith and their role in the Church.
As usual, the Bishops will examine the national reality and the Church during the meeting, and will also evaluate the work of pastoral areas and other bodies of the Episcopate. In this circumstance there will also be the election of the Secretary-General, as the present - Interim - is the Bishop of Valdivia, Monsignor Ignacio Ducasse, following the resignation of Bishop Santiago Silva, Auxiliary Bishop of Valparaíso, after being chosen Secretary General of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) in May. They will also have to elect the two Bishops who will attend the XIII General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, to be held in October 2012 in Rome on the New Evangelization.
