AMERICA/EL SALVADOR - The Archbishop of San Salvador calls on the government to improve initiatives against violence

Monday, 7 November 2011

San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Church has called on the Salvadoran government to improve the security plan because so far it has failed to achieve the goal of reducing violence, indeed, this has become "a critical situation". This is what the Archbishop of San Salvador, His Exc. Mgr. Jose Luis Escobar Alas said yesterday, during the traditional press conference after the Sunday Mass, a copy of the text was sent to Fides.
"There are some good things in the government plan that must be kept, but we must admit that other things must be changed, since it has not reached the goal", underlined the Archbishop. "We have to stop to analyze the problem, to find the best solution" because 11 people are killed in the country every day. The Archbishop also said that the government must invest more in prevention and combat crime: "the more you walk in the direction of prevention, the better the result will be", said Mgr.Alas, remembering that it is "very little" what government authorities do with regards to this serious problem.
The Archbishop also expressed the hope that soon the country will emerge from this situation of violence "with the help of God and the efforts of all", so that they can change the status of being the most violent country in the world (see Fides 28/10/2011). (CE) (Agenzia Fides 07/11/2011)
