AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Towards the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Friday, 4 November 2011

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - Between 2006 and 2009, 3,540 complaints of bullying were presented in Colombia. 56 percent of those who were subject to harassment is represented by women. This was reported in the November issue of the news Bulletin "Misioneros del Trabajo", published by the National Commission for the pastoral care workers, in the article "Figures that concern Colombia on violence against women".
The note sent to Fides by the Episcopal Conference of Colombia (ECC), recalls that on November 25 the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women will be celebrated, an event established 30 years ago in the First Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Meeting, celebrated in Bogota. The General Assembly of the United Nations approved the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women in 1993 and the Assembly itself, in 1999 declared November 25 as the date to remember this day. Several countries, such as Colombia, have proposed laws to protect women, but the real situation is still far from achieving the goal of eradicating all forms of violence against women.
