VATICAN - The Pope's sorrow for the violence in Cairo and the invitation to pray for "true peace"

Thursday, 13 October 2011

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - At the end of the general audience on Wednesday, October 12, held in St. Peter's Square, Pope Benedict XVI expressed regret for the violence that took place on Sunday in Cairo, inviting us to pray for peace in the Egyptian society. These are the words of the Pope: "I am profoundly saddened by the episodes of violence, that took place in Cairo last Sunday. I share the suffering of the families of the victims and of all the Egyptian people, lacerated by attempts to undermine peaceful coexistence among its communities, a coexistance which is vital to safeguard, especially in this moment of transition. I exhort the faithful to pray that society might enjoy a real peace, based on justice and respect for the freedom and dignity of all citizens. In addition, I support the efforts made by the civil and religious authorities in Egypt, to foster a society in which everyone’s human rights are respected, in particular those of minorities, for the benefit of national unity".
