AMERICA/HONDURAS - "In Honduras, every day you can count deaths due to violence," Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga’s complaint

Monday, 3 October 2011

Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Church of Honduras, using the words expressed by Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, has invited society to respect the lives of others, especially at a moment in which violence is increasing in the country. During the Sunday Mass homily, the Cardinal pointed out that man is the most precious creation of God, so we have to respect the lives of others. He is also saddened by the fact that every day in Honduras many people die due to violence, this indicates that society has turned its back on Jesus Christ, without understanding what the will of God is, a God who expects us to respect each other. He then recalled that not even the life of the Son of God, Lord Jesus was respected. "This is not just a story of the past, but this is what is happening today. Every day in our Honduras" added the cardinal.
Violence in Central America is reaching enormous numbers. Even in Guatemala, a country near Honduras, the situation is very critical. The recent Report on human rights situation in Guatemala and the incidents of violence which occurred during the first eight months of 2011, by the "Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo" (GAM), reveal that up to August 2.233 people were violently killed in the country. Of these 1,882 were men, 306 women, 37 boys and 8 girls. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 03/10/2011)
