AMERICA/PERU - Meeting of the Bolivarian countries PMS: new media in the service of mission

Thursday, 1 September 2011

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - The Bolivarian region countries (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela) are living a special moment of missionary work: from Monday 29, August until Friday, September 2, the National Directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies in these countries, along with some national Secretaries will meet in Lima, Peru, to celebrate the second meeting of the Bolivarian Pontifical Mission Societies. The Secretary General of the Pontifical Society of Missionary Childhood, Jeanne Baptistine Ralamboarison, who has just concluded a visit in Argentina, will join the meeting (see Fides 31/8/2011).
This meeting aims to strengthen the bonds of unity between the national headquarters of the PMS, to renew their missionary projects in the light of the Magisterium of the Church, to reflect, above all, on the work carried out by St. Peter the Apostle and Missionary Childhood societies. An important issue that needs to be discussed is the topic regarding new information technologies and communication, and the use of these resources as essential tools in the Church's missionary work.
Fr. Victor Livore, national Director of the PMS in Peru, reports to Fides that the five countries of this region have taken into consideration the "Virtual Program on Missionary Formation": they all agreed to continue to support and promote it as the favourite method to provide a complete formation to missionaries around the world. What was recalled was what the Holy Father said in his Message for World Day of Social Communications, and that is to say that the Church is called to evangelize through the media, that this "digital age" provides, too.
The meeting will also consider the preparation for the Fourth American Missionary Congress (CAM 4 - COMLA 9) to be held in Venezuela in 2013. The meeting will end on Friday, September 2 with the celebration of a Mass of thanksgiving at the altar of the Peruvian saints in the Basilica of St. Dominic in downtown Lima.
