Port-au-Prince (Agenzia Fides) - The challenge of healing the wounds of many thousands of people severely affected by the earthquake that devastated the island of Haiti in January 2010 continues. Among these, there are numerous activities carried out by the Volunteers Association for International Service (VAIS). The Association is currently working on 3 new nutrition centers in Port-au-Prince and the training and equipping of five health centers in Les Cayes (in the town hall of Torbeck). Practical support that reaches over 10,000 children in Haiti, victims of malnutrition, deteriorated after the earthquake in January 2010. From here, in a statement sent to Fides by VAIS, the commitment to sustain the population of Port-au-Prince and the area of Torbeck.
In the first case the first renovations have been carried out, while in the second case laboratories have been equipped with thermometers, scales, chairs, otoscopes, disinfectants, and all the possible things needed and used in a health center. Medical and paramedical staff training is being provided, a commitment that involves 150 people. But the beneficiaries of these projects are many more: in addition to the 10 000 children in Port-au-Prince (Cité Soleil and Martissant district) that will have access to these new nutrition centers with screening services, care, nutrition education, the 8,370 families in the area of Torbeck will also benefit from this presence (South Department).
