Saturday, 26 February 2011

Montes Claros (Agenzia Fides) – Fr Romeu Drago was seen for the last time about 8.00 pm on 19 February. His charred body was found the next day about 25 km from the city of Montes Claros. In the statement sent to Fides by the Archdiocese, Archbishop José Alberto Moura of Montes Claros laments the situation of insecurity in which the whole community lives. In the statement it says that “last Saturday, the 19th of this month, in the city of Montes Claros, Fr Romeu Drago was killed in his home. The body was brought to the area of Janaúba along the highway, about 25 km from his home, where he was burned. Several items were stolen and even his car, thereby indicating robbery as a motive. The safe was opened. Investigations have not ascertained the reason for the crime. The diocesan priest was 56 years old. He was the head of the community of Our Lady of Mount Caramel.” The Archbishop emphasized: “We are saddened by this and by the lack of security in which we live.” Fr Drago's remains will be taken to his native city of Maryland, in the State of Espirito Santo, as soon as the Institute of Forensic Medicine permits, and after the funeral Mass at the Cathedral of Montes Claros.
