ASIA/INDIA - Malnutrition continues to have a lethal effect on children in the tribes of Madhya Pradesh

Thursday, 16 December 2010

Shivpuri (Agenzia Fides) – According to a report by the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), in two months five children from the Sahariya tribe in Madhya Pradesh have died from malnutrition, and another ten are seriously malnourished just in the village of Nahargada. The village falls in the Shivpuri district and has been recognised since 2004 for emergencies such as malnutrition and other mortal diseases. The “Right to Food Campaign Madhya Pradesh”, revealed that about 50 children died and that in the Shivpuri district, 9,450 children (20.7%) are currently severely malnourished, most belonging to a tribe. In November, the same emergency had already been reported amongst the Kol tribe in the district of Rewa (see Fides 19/11/2010). This shows that the Government has failed to eradicate hunger and infant malnutrition, despite the continuing deaths among children of the tribes in the region. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 16/12/2010)
