ASIA/HONG KONG - Towards the Year for the Laity: proposals for parishes to promote lay participation in Church life

Friday, 26 November 2010

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) – The preparatory Formation Course for the Year for the Laity has put forward its proposals to parishes to promote the Year for the Laity. According to reports from Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), the theme for the Year - “Follow me (Mk 1:17): call, communion and mission” - was the principal theme of the course, organized by the Preparatory Commission for the Year for the Laity, from the Diocese of Hong Kong on 21 November. According to Msgr. Dominic Chan, diocesan vicar and president of the Commission, “the secular nature of the laity is an advantage that allows them to transmit the faith through a living witness. The faithful should imitate the holiness of the saints in daily life with patience, humility and virtue.” In addition, “through prayer meetings on social life, we promote care of the laity to the Church and society.”
The proposals suggested to the parishes to promote the Year for the Laity are: reading of the diocesan document “Formation and mission of the laity”, sharing the experience of baptism, the daily recitation of the Year for the Laity Prayer, the reinterpretation of the New Testament throughout the year, following the example of their patron, making a pilgrimage to the 12 churches during the year, the participation in social and ecological activities at least four times a year, reading the “Indications of the Catechism for the Diocese of Hong Kong”, and being a model for others in work and in life.
