Friday, 26 November 2010

Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - “The emergence of cholera is uncontrollable. A few days before the election there it is shooting up in the streets, among the corpses strewn everywhere. The people, having no alternative, are putting the bodies in rubbish bags and searching for areas where they can deposit them.” This was reported to Fides by Father Antonio Menegon, Head of the Camillian Mission in Haiti, struggling with the management of this latest emergency, which is devastating the battered island. The religious are engaged in the distribution of medicines, disinfectants and aid of all kinds for the prevention and treatment, through Foyer Saint Camille's project which is giving assistance to people with cholera. According to the Camillians the situation is particularly critical as political and social tensions have serious effects on the possibility of containing the propagation of the epidemic.
