AMERICA/PERU - Callao city in a state of Permanent Mission

Saturday, 17 July 2010

Callao (Agenzia Fides) – Tomorrow, Sunday 18 July, missionaries in Callao will live another intense moment of the journey of the Great Continental Mission. For the past two years they have been engaged in 'Operation Contact' slowly but with great success. The whole of Callao province is now in a permanent state of mission, in concrete response to a call by the local Bishop Miguel Irizar Campos, who urged all parish communities to organise proclamation of the Good News of the Gospel, today more than ever necessary seeing the situation of violence which involves especially the young people. A statement sent to Fides by the archdiocese of Callao, says the second meeting of 2010 was held at San Juan Bosco parish, situated in an area of frequent episodes of violence.
This Sunday's activity, which has been called "sounding the bell", will begin with a Mass presided by Mgr Juan de Dios Rojas, the Vicar General who is in charge of the Great Mission in Callao, assisted by the parish priest Salesian Fr Jaime Payano. This “celebration of evangelisation” is for all the missionaries of all four deaneries. More than 500 people will welcome brothers and sisters, members of the diocese, who have completed a special course of mission formation which ended with the closing Retreat 9 - 11 July. The new missionaries wearing a cross and carrying a Bible will announce the Gospel message of peace and love: following the example of the first disciples of Jesus Christ, they will go out to the whole area knocking at every door.
