AMERICA/BRAZIL - Brazilian religious working to help maimed children in Haiti

Thursday, 4 March 2010

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) – Recently, the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB) accepted and unanimously approved the "Project of the Church of Brazil, in Solidarity with Haiti,” presented to the Permanent Council of the CNBB by the Council of Religious of Brazil (CRB) and Caritas Brazil. Contacted by the Fides, Sister Antonia Mendes Gomes, CRB Director of the project of solidarity with Haiti, said that the initiative, still under preparation, will lead the way for a multidisciplinary team of religious to go and pay their work in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. National Missionary Council (COMINA) is in charge of coordinating the project. COMINA gathers the forces of the missionary Church in Brazil, CNBB, CRB, CCM, PMS, with the support of Caritas Brazil, the National Council for the Laity in Brazil, and ANEC.
The project consists in the creation of a religious community in Haiti to help children maimed in the earthquake. The community will be based in Port-au-Prince and will be active for the duration of a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 10. The hope is that this group will be composed of a multidisciplinary team: religious, doctors, nurses, physical therapists, physical therapists, educators, and social workers belonging to different religious congregations.
According to Sister Marian Ambosio, President of the CRB, other initiatives should be included in the project. A major concern of Brazilian Bishops is, in fact, how to help the Church in Haiti for the formation of seminarians and the reconstruction of churches, seminaries, and formation houses of religious congregations.
