EUROPE/SPAIN - Youth of Madrid celebrate “Missionary Youth” for feast of Our Lady of the Almudena

Thursday, 5 November 2009

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – On the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of the Almudena, Patroness of Madrid, to whom the Cathedral “Santa Maria, la Real de la Almudena” is dedicated, the youth of Madrid from “Juventud Misionera” (Missionary Youth) will go out to invite other youth to participate in the Prayer Vigil to be held in the Cathedral on the eve of the feast, November 8, at 8:00pm. The youth will be lined up from the “Plaza de España” to the Cathedral, holding candles and wearing shirts with the words “Si a Maria” (“Yes to Mary”) written on them, inviting other youth to come and join them in prayer. This new form of presence and missionary witness of the youth on the city streets was inaugurated by Missionary Youth at Christmas 2008 (see Fides 17/12/2008) and nicknamed “SANPA,” in reference to the Jubilee Year of St. Paul. With this initiative, they hope to encourage the youth to bear witness to their faith with joy and simplicity, but also with courage and without fear, as Saint Paul did.
