VATICAN - Telegram of condolence from the Holy Father for Italian soldiers killed in terrorist attack in Kabul

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father Benedict XVI sent a telegram of condolence for the Italian soldiers who were victims in the terrorist attack in Kabul (Afghanistan), to Military Bishop of Italy, His Excellency Vincenzo Pelvi. The telegram, signed by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State, was read this morning, at the beginning of the Funeral Services held at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, presided by Bishop Pelvi. This is the text of the telegram: “Profoundly saddened by the tragic terrorist attack in Kabul, in which six Italian soldiers lost their lives along with several civilians, the Supreme Pontiff expresses his sincerest condolences to your Excellency, their relatives, and their respective communities, as well as the Military Diocese and the entire Italian nation. While he unites himself spiritually to the funeral celebration, His Holiness invokes the maternal intercession of Mary Most Holy, Regina Pacis, that God, everlasting source of hope and strength in goodness, may sustain those who work every day in the world to build solidarity, reconciliation, and peace, and sends his heartfelt and comforting Apostolic Blessing to all the participants in the sacred liturgy, especially keeping in mind the wounded soldiers.
