ASIA/TAIWAN - The Pope appoints new Auxiliary Bishop of Taipei

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, on 31 October, appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese of Taipei (Taiwan) Rev. Thomas Chung An-zu, of the clergy of Tainan, until now Chaplain of Fu Jen Catholic University, assigning to him the titular See of Munaziana.
Rev. Thomas Chung An-zu was born in Yunlin, Diocese of Tainan on 7 August 1952. He was educated at the local Salesian school and then studied philosophy and theology at the Major Seminary of Tainan. He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Tainan on 26 December 1981. Since his ordination is has ministered as follows: 1981-1984: Rector of the minor seminary; 1984-1986: Studies for a licentiate in moral theology at the Alphonsianum, in Rome; 1986-1992: professor of moral theology and spirituality and assistant spiritual director at Tainan Seminary; 1992-1995: degree in moral theology at the Alphonsianum, in Rome; 1996-2000: professor of moral theology at Taiwan Major Regional Seminary; 1998-2001: diocesan chancellor and parish priest of St Joseph’s parish church; diocesan consultant, a member of the council of priests, the pastoral council, and the commission for the elderly, coordinator diocesan commission for the Third Millennium; 2000-2003: rector of Taiwan Major regional seminary.
