AFRICA/CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC - Appointment of the new Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies

Vatican City (Fides News Agency) – Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization (Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches), appointed His Exc. Msgr. Juan José Aguirre Muñoz, M.C.C.J., as Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in the Central African Republic on August 10, 2026, for a five-year term (2026–2031).
The second Bishop of Bangassou, 72, (Córdoba, Spain, 5 June 1954), with 46 years of priestly ministry (ordained on 13 September 1980) and 28 years as a Bishop (ordained on 10 May 1998), was appointed Coadjutor Bishop in 1997 and received episcopal ordination in 1998. He succeeded to the See in 2000.
On 24 June 2026, the Holy Father accepted his resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Bangassou (Central African Republic). He was succeeded by His Excellency Bishop Aurelio Gazzera, O.C.D., previously Coadjutor Bishop of the same See.
