AFRICA/ZIMBABWE - Appointment of Bishop of Chinhoyi

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has appointed Rev. Fr Patrick Ngwenya, from the clergy of Harare, until now Parish Priest at St Francis Xavier, in Harare and Diocesan Coordinator for the Family and Marriage Commission, as Bishop of Chinhoyi.

Patrick Ngwenya was born on February 1, 1967, in Mutare, in the Diocese of the same name. He earned a diploma in Educational Sciences from the University of Zimbabwe and a diploma in Marketing from the Business Career Development College (LCCI - London Chamber of Commerce and Industry). After working as a teacher, he entered the Sacred Heart Regional Preparatory Seminary in Mazowe, in the Archdiocese of Harare. He studied philosophy at St. Augustine's Philosophical Seminary in the Diocese of Bulawayo, and completed his theological studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas "Angelicum" in Rome.

He was ordained a priest on August 25, 2007, and incardinated in the Archdiocese of Harare.

He has held the following positions and carried out further studies: Parish Vicar of St. Francis of Assisi in Chegutu, Harare (2007-2008); Parish Priest and Superior of All Souls Mission in Mutoko, Harare (2008-2012); Vicar Forane - East Deanery (2010-2012); Member of the College of Consultors (2010-2022); Parish Vicar of St. Matia Kalemba in Norton, Harare (2012-2013); Diploma in Executive Secretarial, LCCI (2013-2014); Diploma in Executive Secretarial, Speciss College, Harare (2013-2014); Vicar and Pastoral Assistant at St. Peter Canisius Parish in Marlborough (2013-2014); Secretary to the Archbishop of Harare (2013-2022); President of the Ruvarashe Trust, Catholic Centre for Persons with Disabilities in the Mission in Makumbi (2013-2022); Licentiate Studies in Marriage and Family Life at the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences in Kerala, India (2022-2024); Until now, Director of the Marriage Commission of the Archdiocese of Harare (since 2008), Assistant Secretary to the Archbishop of Harare (since 2012), Coordinator for the Family Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Harare (since 2024) and Parish Priest at St. Francis Xavier Parish, Braeside, Harare (since 2025).
