Thursday, 15 August 2024

Vatican City (Fides News Agency) - "On the morning of August 14, 2024, a cordial conversation was held between Mr. Li Hui, Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Eurasian Affairs, and Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, within the mission entrusted to the prelate by Pope Francis for peace in Ukraine, and following last September's meeting in Beijing".

This was announced in the Holy See Press Office bulletin, issued late on the morning of August 15th. During the call, the Vatican said, "great concern was expressed about the situation and the need to promote dialogue between the Parties, with suitable international guarantees for a just and lasting peace."

The call arrived just short of a year after Cardinal Zuppi's trip to Beijing in September 2023. China was the fourth and final stop for the papal envoy who, between June and July, had first visited Kiev, then Moscow and subsequently Washington, with the aim of "easing tensions in the conflict in Ukraine, in the hope - which the Holy Father has never relinquished - that this may initiate pathways to peace".

Then, in September, three days in the Chinese capital, where the cardinal had had a conversation with Li Hui himself, and with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China about the war in Ukraine and the need to join efforts to promote dialogue and find pathways condusive to peace. This need was also reiterated in the phone call over the past few hours. In Beijing, Cardinal Zuppi also celebrated Mass with the Catholic community (F.B.) (Fides News Agency)
