Kampala (Agenzia Fides) - "We must raise our voices to alert the world so that it does not forget the Sudanese crisis," is the urgent appeal of the executive director of the Sudanese organization "The Female Guardians" in the context of a campaign aimed at drawing the world's attention to the extent of the humanitarian tragedy in Sudan.
"We not only call for an immediate ceasefire, but also appeal to the parties to the conflict to fulfill their obligations and open safe corridors for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Sudanese population," continued Hadia Hasaballah.
The campaign launched by "The Female Guardians" (El Harisat, which means "female guardians" in Arabic) has the slogan: "We must not close our eyes to the famine in Sudan". The action will last 30 days and includes, among other things, a 24-day hunger strike with the aim of donating the value of the uneaten food to Sudanese refugees in the Kiryandongo camp in Bweyale in western Uganda.
"We will use all the means at our disposal to raise awareness and ask the international community for help," said Hasaballah, citing initiatives including global information stands and a day dedicated to solidarity with Sudanese children through drawings of a Wall of Hunger.
"Twenty-five million Sudanese are in urgent need of food, more than 10 million have abandoned their homes. 55 percent of the displaced are children and almost a third have had to flee several times," said the director of "El Harisat". "Around 7,000 young mothers are at risk of dying with their babies due to food shortages. Six million women are at risk of gender-based violence. In addition, there are currently around 11,000 cases of cholera and 5,000 cases of dengue fever in Sudan." (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 1/8/2024)
