Calcutta (Agenzia Fides) - "The life, the message, the embodied spirituality, the legacy of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta, foundress of the Missionaries of Charity (MC), are still relevant and significant for India and for the whole world, 25 years after her death, a shining example of fidelity to Christ and his Gospel", said Msgr. Thomas D'Souza, Archbishop of Calcutta, who on September 5 celebrated the 25th anniversary of Mother Teresa's death (who died on September 5, 1997) at the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity (the Mother House) in Calcutta, capital of the state of Bengal western eastern.
"Everyone, regardless of religious affiliation, are called to imitate Mother Teresa's works of charity for people and society. The best way to pay homage to her is to do some charitable work every day for others, bringing love and mercy", notes the Archbishop.
To celebrate the memory of the Mother, many pilgrims went to her tomb and the Missionaries of Charity distributed food to the poor in many parts of India in her name, Sister Christy, a religious of the Missionaries of Charity, tells Fides. The Catholic Association of Bengal (CAB) held a special celebration bringing together civil and religious leaders. "Mother Teresa - reads a note from CAB sent to Fides - is a symbol of Christianity in India, she showed service to the last, the dying and the derelict as the way of the Christian who lives the Gospel to the letter. Her example offered to the Indian nation and to all humanity showed us the truth and essence of Christianity, that is, fidelity and following Christ to the end".
"The religious who follow in her footsteps continue to work in welcoming the last, giving a daily witness of love and service to the marginalized and the most vulnerable, in a silent, sober, discreet manner: their mission of service is precious for India today", remarks the CAB.
In 1950 Mother Teresa (1910-1997) founded the Missionaries of Charity, a female religious congregation that today has more than 5,000 missionaries in 136 countries around the world, who serve the poorest of the poor for free.
In October 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified her. On September 4, 2016, Pope Francis declared Mother Teresa as Saint. (SD/PA) (Agenzia Fides, 8/9/2022)
