AFRICA/MOZAMBIQUE - Thousands still flee violence in northern Mozambique

Maputo (Agenzia Fides) - "Killings, beheadings and dismemberment of bodies, sexual violence, kidnappings, forced recruitment by armed groups and torture". These are the war crimes committed by armed groups active in the province of Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, denounced by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). According to UNHCR, some 24,000 people have been displaced in Nangade district since January and are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Five thousand other people sought refuge in a border area with Tanzania. According to local authorities, the district of Mueda hosts 134,515 displaced people, making it one of the largest districts hosting displaced communities in Cabo Delgado. Another humanitarian organization, the Girl Child Rights Organization, reports that displaced people in the districts of Metuge and Chiúre, in Cabo Delgado, are receiving food rations cut in half. The resulting acute malnutrition mainly affects children under five, pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with disabilities. According to the report, a relatively high percentage of IDPs survive on a diet below what UNICEF calls "the minimum meal frequency and minimum standard of food diversity".
