Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - The Permanent Commission of the Venezuelan Bishops has published a declaration on the right to life, entitled "Great Human Values", in which it states: "in the face of the real possibility of imposing, on the part of a minority, a completely new legal order which transforms the meaning of life and introduces a new dimension of the culture of death among us, we raise our cry of alarm in defense of these great human values".
In the text, sent to Agenzia Fides, the Bishops reiterate that "at all times every human being must be respected in his dignity, from which his rights come, especially the most fundamental of all, such as the right to life". In recent years, they continue, attempts have been made to impose on the whole world a mentality contrary to the right to life, to the integrity of the human person and of the family, through major advertising campaigns financed by international companies in order to impose laws in favor of abortion, euthanasia and gender ideology, "by appealing to a false concept of modernity, by inventing new human rights and by justifying positions contrary to God's plan".
"Venezuela is no exception - complain the Bishops, citing groups and movements echoing this anti-life mentality that have found fertile ground among some leaders of different political ideologies who, for years, have been promoting laws that approve this type of action, although we are overwhelmed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Venezuelan people have always loved life, as expressed in the Constitution and in the legal order, defending and protecting human life, promoting the unity of the family and the dignity of the human being.
The Bishops therefore launch the following appeal: "To all Catholics and people of good will, we invite you to make your voice heard and to unite your strength in all ways to prevent these laws from being approved in our country" . They therefore support all priests, deacons, consecrated persons and lay people, groups for the life and pastoral care of the family "to continue to carry out awareness raising initiatives among the population", with "determination and perseverance", announcing the Gospel of Life, in order to "prevent the adoption of those laws which, far from the centrality of the person, end up imposing a culture of death, far from our faith and our solidarity".
