AMERICA/PERU - "Selvas Amazónicas": Dominican Order launches new magazine

Iquitos (Agenzia Fides) - With the magazine “Selvas Amazónicas”, the Dominican Order is launching a new magazine that aims to report and analyze the reality of the communities in the Amazon forest in which Dominicans are active among the poorest and most vulnerable.
The magazine, which will be published three times a year, will appear in March with its first issue. With an inviting design, it is intended to give readers a better understanding of the social and cultural realities of indigenous peoples and other disadvantaged groups. Due to the anthropological experience of the Order in this area, the magazine would like to encourage reflection on the reality in the missions and give impulses for the protection of the dignity and rights of the most disadvantaged, contributing to the construction of a more supportive, committed and fraternal citizenship. The publication therefore aims to bring the reader closer to the cultural worlds of different continents where there are a large number of missionaries, religious and lay people: Uruguay, Paraguay, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Equatorial Guinea, etc.
Each issue is dedicated to a specific topic. This first edition of “Selvas Amazónicas” focuses on indigenous peoples and is entitled “Pueblos Originarios”. It contains in-depth articles that have emerged from the collective experience of those who accompany many of these peoples in various places, especially in the Amazon rainforest. Among other things, it contains the report of a Guatemalan missionary from the Quiché Maya people, an interview with the committed indigenous laywoman Jovita Vásquez from Peru, a reflection on the worldview of the indigenous peoples in Paraguay and information about a special project of the Dominican Order in the Amazon region.
