Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - The rector of the Basilica Minore Nuestra Señora de Suyapa, Father Carlo Magno Núñez, Father Charlemagne Núñez, condemned the many murders of women in the country during the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist, which is usually presided over by the Cardinal Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Rodriguez Maradiaga, who is ill with Covid 19. Based on the Sunday Gospel, he called the phenomenon a kind of "leprosy".
"The murder of so many women in Honduras must stop," said the priest during the homily, calling for the fight against organized crime and more respect for human life.
He therefore commented on the passage from the Gospel in which Jesus heals the leper as follows: "As disciples of Jesus we are sent today to heal the lepers of our time". To do this, one must be filled with compassion and ask for it in prayer.
In this context, the priest also criticized the social exclusion in Honduras. "We have to learn, like Jesus, to welcome all people who are excluded from our society due to different circumstances", he emphasized and called for more solidarity with those in need. "Today the new lepers are those who are excluded from society, migrants, prostitutes and those who are of no value in society because they are considered lepers".
At the end of the celebration, he asked for the prayer for the recovery of Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga: "We will continue to pray for him so that we can see him again soon with us and at work for the community". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 16/2/2021)
