Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The second edition of the multimedia training course entitled "Communication is Mission" has begun. The course is promoted by the Faculty of Institutional Social Communication of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, in collaboration with the Pontifical Missionary Union and with Agenzia Fides. The 2020-2021 course, which lasts one academic year, aims to offer specific training addressed to pastoral workers of the Churches under the jurisdiction of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, following a mentality that considers media communication an opportunity and a way to spread the Gospel. It is attended for students residing in international colleges managed by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (CEP), and lay people from the Churches of the territories linked to CEP. Training, provided thanks to the skills and structures made available by the Faculty of Institutional Social Communication of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, offers methodological, theoretical and practical tools, relating to multimedia communication to teach stories, news, events and experiences that characterize the mission of the Church in the contemporary world.
After the happy conclusion of the first edition 2019-2020, despite the difficulties linked to the coronavirus pandemic, the promoters wanted to organize this second edition to continue to offer direct support to those who work within the Churches located in the so-called "mission territories", in Africa, Asia and Latin America. At least in the first phase, the course is held using a web platform. As soon as conditions allow it, face-to-face lessons can be scheduled.
As stated by Massimo Ilardo, director of the course, "Evangelization can only take into consideration the environment of new communication technologies, which creates and constitutes an integral part of culture in the contemporary world, even in the field of human relations". "As Pope Francis affirms in his Message for the XLVIII World Day of Social Communications in 2014, communication helps to give shape to the missionary vocation of the whole Church", Ilardo points out.
Father Fabrizio Meroni, PIME, Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union (PUM) and Director of Agenzia Fides, confirmed the commitment of PUM in this field "to investigate, reflect and illuminate the relationship between faith and the world with the message of salvation, with the aim of making the Christian announcement present in the world of digital communication".
The study program is divided into two semesters, from November 2020 to May 2021, and includes the study and laboratory experimentation of video, radio, web, photography and written languages. (PA) (Agenzia Fides, 24/11/2020)
