School reform: Bishops express concern

La Paz (Agenzia Fides) - "We pray together that the elected will take on their responsibility and that this may have a positive impact on the progress of the country", said the Chairman of the Bolivian Bishops' Conference, Mgr. Ricardo Centellas, referring to the formation of the new government after the elections on October 18th, when over 7 million Bolivians went to vote to elect a new President and members of the two chambers of Parliament.
"Bolivia - says the Bishop in his message sent to Fides - is a country with great potential for great development, but it is necessary to work together and responsibly for it.
For this we ask the recently installed government, one single but fundamental thing: respect for the Constitution". "We know that Bolivia is experiencing various crises and we have to realize that they have to be faced together", he concluded.
When he was sworn in, the new President Luis Arce affirmed in front of parliamentarians, citizens and international guests: "We are beginning a new phase in our history without discrimination. We will try to rebuild our country in order to live in peace".
Meanwhile, former President Evo Morales returned to Bolivia on Monday, who will not assume any government office, as Luis Arce had emphasized several times before the elections. In an interview, Arce, 57, also admitted that the "biggest mistake" made last year was to propose Morales for a fourth term despite a negative referendum on a constitutional amendment".
The election last October became necessary after the previous election on October 20, 2019, from which President Evo Morales emerged victorious in the first round, was objected to by observers from the Organization of American States (OSA) and canceled in November 2019.
