La Paz (Agenzia Fides) - "We deplore and reject the irresponsible and immoral corruption in the acquisition of ventilators to save the life of the sick. We denounce any attitude and action that endangers the life and health of others, in particular the political exploitation of these issues for electoral purposes. Every public official must act with honesty and transparency": this is what the Bishops of Bolivia say in a statement sent to Agenzia Fides which takes stock of the social and political situation, with respect to the spread of the coronavirus.
The statement was presented on May 28 by Mgr. Aurelio Pesoa, Secretary General of the Bolivian Bishops' Conference (CEB) and accompanied by Father José Fuentes, deputy secretary general of the CEB. The Bishops share the anxieties, difficulties and worries of the Bolivian people, faced with the new reality of over seven thousand infected by Covid19 and point out the danger of it spreading.
"Personal responsibility in preventive care is needed. We reaffirm our solidarity with the sick and their families and thank all those who have promoted initiatives to alleviate the consequences of the pandemic in our population", says the text.
The Bolivian Church, in all its local divisions, parishes, associations, movements and communities - concludes the statement - is ready to do its part, always staying by the side of the population, making available its resources and structures for each necessity, above all for the needs of the suffering and the needy. On the other hand, the Church is alongside the other social and political institutions, in the awareness campaign, inviting every citizen to act responsibly, for the protection of life and public health. The expressed wish is that of national unity, so that united - society, politics, religious communities - we can defeat the pandemic. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 30/5/2020)
